The River Disappeared… and Left a Motherlode Behind! 😱
When the Australian summer hits full tilt, most people are looking for the nearest air conditioner or a patch of shade. But for us, the rising heat and drying creeks mean one thing: it’s time to get onto the bedrock.
In our latest video, I took the whole family out to the Trunkey Creek area for a day of sun, dirt, and—eventually—some serious "yellah." We weren't alone, though; we had Nick from Picket Gold Prospecting and his partner Maria with us to help track down the heavy stuff.
The Summer Advantage
There is something eerie about walking down a creek bed that is usually waist-deep. The "brutal" heat has basically erased the flowing water, leaving nothing but sporadic puddles and deep, stagnant pools.
While it looks a bit bleak, it’s actually a gold prospector’s dream. This is the only time of year we can get right into the middle of the creek and reach deep spots that haven't been touched in years. If the gold is anywhere, it’s sitting right on that bottom shelf where it’s been trapped for decades.

A Lesson in Resilience
I’ll be honest with you—the day did not start out as a success story. We spent hours grinding it out. We were digging deep into cracks, scraping out packed wash that hasn't seen the sun in ages, and test-panning until our backs ached.
For a long time, the river was being stingy. We’d wash a full pan and find maybe one or two tiny "fly specks." We even accidentally spent some time digging in someone else’s old tailings pile (pro tip: if the rocks look suspiciously organized, someone has likely been there before!).
With the kids getting a bit restless and the temperature climbing, we were getting close to calling it a day. But in prospecting, the "motherlode" is usually hiding just one crevice away.

Hitting the Motherlode
The turning point came when Nick pointed out a specific bedrock crevice he’d been eyeing. I broke out the yabbie pump to snipe the deep material out of the cracks, and the vibe changed instantly.
Suddenly, we weren't just finding micros. As soon as I started washing the dirt, I could see gold sitting right there on the top of the material before I’d even finished the pan! It was that beautiful, chunky Trunkey Creek gold we’d been hunting for all day.
But the gold wasn't the only treasure. The pans were absolutely loaded with:
- Deep Red Garnets: Dozens of them in every single pan.
- Gemstones: Nick even found a rare green stone that glowed like crazy when held up to the sun.
A Family Win
There is nothing quite like the feeling of finally seeing "color" in the pan after a long day of hard work—especially when you have the whole family there to celebrate the win. We ended the day on a massive high note, with plenty of gold and gems to show for our efforts and some very happy kids.
If you want to see the moment we finally hit the jackpot (and see my dad’s questionable choice in prospecting footwear), check out the new video over on the channel!

Have you ever prospected in the dry season? I’d love to hear if you prefer working the high water or sniping the bedrock cracks like we did. Let me know in the comments!
