Halloween Desert Gold: How We Uncovered Gold Nuggets in the California High Desert

The crisp autumn breeze across the California high desert hits a little differently when you’re out on the claim with family and good mates. Back over Halloween weekend in 2023, we packed up the rigs, loaded up the kids, and headed out into the high desert for what turned out to be one of our most memorable desert gold digs to date. Joining us on this run were good mates Cory and James, making it a full crew ready to chase some desert paydirt and enjoy a classic weekend under the wide-open desert sky.

Setting Up Base Camp & The Drywashers

When you arrive out on the claim, the first order of business is always setting up a solid base camp. In the high desert, establishing a comfortable, organized staging area is key—especially when you’ve got kids running around eager to explore. We leveled out the campsite, pitched the tents, and set up our staging area before turning our focus to the heavy machinery: setting up the drywashers.

Unlike river sluicing where you rely on fluid water hydraulics, drywashing requires setting up your hopper, tuning the air blower motor, and dialing in the angle of the deck so the vibrating riffle box exchanges light desert sands for heavy black sands and gold. We leveled out the legs, connected the air hoses, and ran a quick test pass to make sure the airflow created that perfect fluid-bed movement across the riffles. With base camp locked down and the gear ready to process dirt, it was time to transition into full Halloween mode.

Pumpkins, Pickaxes, and Desert Dirt

Before unleashing the heavy shoveling, we gathered the kids—Lucca and Finn—around camp for a proper Halloween tradition: carving jack-o'-lanterns right out in the dirt. Sitting on camp chairs surrounded by creosote bushes and desert gravels, the boys gutted their pumpkins, carved out spooky faces, and perched the finished jack-o'-lantern right on the desert floor to keep watch over our dig site.

With the pumpkin carved and guarding the claim, the boys grabbed their mini shovels and buckets, itching to get to work. That’s the magic of family prospecting out in the high desert—it’s equal parts hard work and pure playground. The boys loved helping shovel dry earth, classification screens, and watching the dust fly as the drywasher roared to life.

Striking the Paystreak: Heavy Desert Nuggets

Once we started scraping back the top layer of overburden and digging deeper into the ancient desert wash, we knew we were getting into the right material. Cory, James, and I took turns feeding shovels of dry paydirt into the hopper while keeping a close eye on how the deck was handling the feed rate.

It wasn't long into day one before the desert delivered a serious trick-or-treat. Digging down toward a hardpack layer near bedrock, we broke into a rich paystreak loaded with heavy gold. As the dust settled and the air motor hummed, we peered into the riffle box and saw the unmistakable flash of raw, chunky gold trapped right in the riffle cloth.

We shut down the air blower to inspect the traps, and sure enough, we weren't just catching fine flour gold—we were pulling out multiple large gold nuggets! Picking up those coarse, rough desert nuggets straight out of the dry dirt is a thrill that never gets old. Seeing the boys' eyes light up when they got to hold real desert gold nuggets that they helped dig out of the ground made every bit of shoveling worth it.

A Halloween Memory Built to Last

By the time the afternoon sun began to dip behind the desert ridges, we had a riffle box packed with rich black sand concentrates and a pan full of chunky yellow gold. We gathered back around base camp, cooked up a warm meal, and watched the carved pumpkin glow against the darkening desert landscape while sharing stories from the day's dig.

That 2023 Halloween trip proved that the high desert holds plenty of hidden treasure if you're willing to put in the work and run the right gear. Between great times with Cory and James, watching the kids embrace the prospecting lifestyle, and uncovering a stack of beautiful gold nuggets, day one set a high-water mark for desert family adventures.
