The Danger Zone: Why Old Tailing Fields Are Loaded (And Deadly)
During the historic gold rushes, miners moved millions of tons of earth by hand, pick, and shovel. They dug extensive vertical shafts following rich quartz veins deep underground, dumping the leftover rock and waste material—known as "tailings"—around the shaft entrances.
Because early dry-blowing and hand-sorting technology was primitive compared to modern equipment, fine nuggets and gold-bearing quartz regularly slipped through their hands and ended up on the scrap heap.
However, prospecting these tailing piles today requires total situational awareness:
- Hidden Collapses: The ground surrounding old shafts is often undercut and structurally unstable. Stepping near the edge of an opening can trigger a catastrophic cave-in.
- Overgrown Openings: Decades of wild regrowth disguise deep drops. What looks like a patch of grass or a pile of dead branches can actually be a "blind shaft."
- Extreme Mineralization: Tailing mounds are loaded with ironstone, hot rocks, and heavy black sand, which blind standard VLF metal detectors.

The Payoff: Pushing Through the Hazards
While checking every footstep near open drops, the detector delivered that undeniable, sharp high-pitch target response every prospector dreams of hearing. - Keep Your Eyes on the Ground (Not Just the Coil): It’s easy to get "coil-vision" when you’re listening intently to target audio. Force yourself to look ahead and check your immediate landing footstep before taking a stride.
- Never Trust Shaft Edges: Never lean over or stand on the lip of an open hole. The timber framing inside old shafts rots over time, leaving the surrounding soil completely un-supported.
- Prospect with a Buddy: Never navigate hazardous, shaft-riddled ground alone. Always ensure someone knows your location and keeps visual contact with you throughout the hunt.
