The search for gold in the Australian bush is a constant cycle of learning, adapting, and refining your setup. If you have spent any time running a river sluice down a creek, you know the exact mix of excitement and frustration that comes with processing paydirt. Drop riffle sluices have surged in popularity over the last few years because of their simplicity and versatility—they don't require heavy matting or complicated setup, and they excel at trapping gold quickly.
However, standard factory plastic sluices are far from perfect. After seasons of bending over riverbanks and fighting with off-the-shelf equipment, it became clear that a major redesign was long overdue.
In our latest 38-minute YouTube epic—We Tested the ULTIMATE Gold Sluice (And Built a Zombie Fort!)—we took our brand-new prototypes straight to the riverbed for their first and final field test. Here is a deep dive into why we built the 10” OG Chrisundertaking Drop Riffle Sluice, how it performed on bedrock paydirt, and how a routine family trip turned into an unforgettable day of prospecting, friendly rivalry, and bush fort survival.
The Problem with Standard Plastic Drop Riffle Sluices
Drop riffle sluices are widely loved for a reason: they are lightweight, easy to clean, and catch fine gold exceptionally well when tuned properly. But if you have used the typical commercial plastic models, you have likely encountered two major engineering flaws that make setting up on the river a headache:
- Thin Material & Flexing: Standard plastic sluices are often made from thin-gauge material (often around 2mm). On uneven riverbeds or heavy currents, thin plastic warps and flexes. This flexing disrupts the smooth, laminar flow of water required to keep drop riffles self-cleaning. Instead of washing away heavy black sand and holding onto gold, dirt flows unevenly, creating dead zones or blowing out your traps.
- Lack of a Flare & Buoyancy Issues: Most basic plastic drop riffles lack a proper built-in flare at the mouth. Without a wide flare to capture and funnel water, finding the precise spot in the creek with the ideal water velocity becomes a chore. Worse yet, because the plastic is so light and buoyant, you end up having to stack half a dozen heavy rocks on top of the box just to stop it from floating away downriver.

Engineering the Fix: The 10” OG Drop Riffle Sluice
To solve these common industry flaws, we went back to the drawing board. After months of digital design, CAD tweaking, and structural testing, we sourced two manufactured prototypes directly out of Sydney: a 2mm version and a heavy-duty 4.5mm version.
Our design focuses on three core upgrades:
- Integrated Wide Flare: Maximizes water intake, making setup in slow or wide creek channels effortless without requiring artificial dams.
- Rigid Structural Wall Thickness: Eliminates twisting, bowing, and warping under heavy water flow, ensuring consistent drop riffle hydraulics across the entire width of the deck.
- Optimized Weight & Stability: Sits solid in the current, drastically reducing the need to anchor the unit down with massive river rocks.
We needed to know if these upgrades would hold up under real-world conditions or fail when fed heavy bedrock gravels.

Field Testing on Bedrock: Gold vs. The Aussie Bush
We packed up the gear, rounded up the family, and headed out to one of our favorite local creek spots. This particular location is well-known for producing reliable fine gold trapped deep in bedrock crevices, but heavy prospecting pressure from local enthusiasts has made finding untouched pockets increasingly challenging.
To get down to the paydirt, we put multiple tools to work—including yabbie pumps to extract heavy concentrates directly off submerged bedrock cracks where standard shovels can't reach.

How the Sluice Performed
Once locked into the current, the difference between the rigid prototype and traditional thin plastic models was night and day:
- Water Hydraulics: The integrated flare captured a tight, aggressive water column that fed smoothly over the drop riffles without backing up.
- Zero Flexing: Even loaded with heavy classification material and seated on uneven river stones, the 4.5mm deck remained completely rigid.
- Gold Retention: The drop riffles active-vortexed heavy black sands as intended, holding onto ultra-fine flour gold and smaller pickers without scouring out.
Family Adventures: Zombie Forts & Friendly Rivalries
Prospecting is always better when shared with family and mates. While the heavy shoveling and sluice tuning were underway at the water's edge, the boys took on a critical mission of their own: defending camp.
Using fallen timber, tarps, sandbags, and natural bush cover, they constructed an epic, fully fortified "Zombie Defense Fort" along the riverbank. Days like these are what outdoor adventuring is all about—combining real equipment testing with hands-on wilderness fun for the kids.
Of course, no trip to the creek is complete without a bit of friendly competition. Nick from Picket Prospecting joined us on the water to run his own setup. A friendly gold weigh-off ensued to see who could pull the heaviest pan off the bedrock by the end of the day.
